Governance Matters created the Board Leadership Taskforce in June 2002 to identify practices that inspire and support organizational leadership by non-profit boards of directors and by individuals serving on those boards. It is our conviction that effective governance, accountability and planning demand that boards have leadership capacity, and that non-profit organizations need their boards to actively lead during periods of transition and crisis.
The Board Leadership Project explores why some boards, and board members, step up to take the lead at times of change and challenge, and why others do not. How do boards create a culture of leadership, and what prepares board members to play a leadership role?
We hope that this website will serve as a resource for board members who find themselves in one of the types of transitions or challenges described, and who want to "do the right thing" but don't know what exactly to do.
