Definition of Effective Governance
In order to promote effective nonprofit governance, we need a consensus on what we mean by effective nonprofit governance. Governance Matters has developed this definition to advance this discussion. We welcome your input.
What is an effective nonprofit board? The most effective governing boards of nonprofit organizations not only carry out their fundamental responsibility to act in the public interest and to fulfill their legal duties, but also provide leadership to assure that:
- the organization's mission is appropriate and relevant; and
- the organization secures, uses and protects its assets to carry out its mission and maximize the benefits to its constituencies.
